Gaetano Zompini, Miracle of the Virgin

18th century
Church of San Giacomo dall'Orio, Venice, Italy

This "miracle" is related in the Golden Legend and several much earlier sources. The Apostles are carrying Mary's bier (lectus in the Latin) to her tomb when a priest of the Jews grabs at it intending to hurl it to the ground. For this he loses his hands. Astonished at this miracle, the priest repents and is converted. In the painting we see the severed hands hanging from the edge of the bier.
